Many women struggle with large and heavy breasts that present physical discomfort and self-esteem issues. Thankfully, when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon, breast reduction surgery can help reduce or eliminate many of those concerns for an enhanced appearance and self-confidence. Breast reduction involves removal of excess breast tissue, fat, and skin for a more proportional and smaller look, as well as a lighter feel.

At Coberly Plastic Surgery & Med Spa, board-certified plastic surgeon Dana Coberly, MD understands how breast reduction surgery can benefit patients both physically and psychologically. She believes women should feel comfortable in their skin and great about the way they look. Alongside her professional team, Dr. Coberly strives to create a warm and welcoming environment for patients seeking any type of breast enhancement.

What is Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction is a procedure performed for women who are experiencing symptoms caused by the weight of the breasts, or who have breasts that are out of proportion with their body. The excessive weight and change in balance can lead to painful neck and back problems, deep grooves from bra straps over the shoulder, and skin problems under the breasts. Study after study has shown that by reducing the size of the breasts, the symptoms caused by the weight will improve.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Reduction?

Breast reduction surgery offers several benefits. The procedure can alleviate physical discomfort like back, neck, and shoulder pain often caused by breasts that are simply too large for one’s body. It can also reduce skin irritation under the breast crease and improve an individual’s posture. Additionally, breast reduction enables patients to engage more comfortably in physical activities, enhancing overall quality of life. The procedure often leads to higher self-esteem and body image satisfaction by creating a breast size more proportionate to the body. It also expands clothing options and can ease the emotional and social stress associated with having overly large breasts.

How is Breast Reduction Performed?

General anesthesia is often used for the breast reduction procedure. The technique used to reduce and lift the breasts depends on the shape and size of the breasts, as well as the size desired. Incisions are often made around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. Excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed, and the remaining tissue is reshaped. Sometimes, the nipple is repositioned to a more elevated position and the skin can be pulled taut for a firmer result. When appropriate, Dr. Coberly utilizes a Short-Scar technique to minimize the length of scars on the breast and to help maintain the breast shape.

Will I Be Able to Breastfeed After the Surgery?

While many women are able to breastfeed after breast reduction, the ability may vary from patient to patient. Some patients may not produce a normal amount of breast milk following the procedure and, if the nipple was removed and repositioned during the surgery, the milk ducts can be affected, which can impact the possibility of breastfeeding. Patients should be sure to communicate any concerns or questions about breastfeeding to Dr. Coberly during the consultation process.

What Will My Breast Reduction Scars Look Like?

The appearance and extent of breast reduction scarring will depend on the surgical technique used. Commonly, scars form an anchor-like pattern: around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the crease. In some cases, a vertical scar from the areola to the breast crease may be the only scar, especially in less extensive reductions. Initially, scars can be red and noticeable, but they generally fade to thin, lighter lines. Proper post-surgical care and following our surgeon’s guidelines can help minimize scar visibility.
