Dr. Dana Coberly, a board-certified plastic surgeon and the head of Coberly Plastic Surgery & Med Spa in Tampa, answers a range of frequently asked questions about facelift, eyelid surgery, and other popular facial rejuvenation procedures.
Tampa, FL – Facial rejuvenation has remained one of the most popular cosmetic enhancement options throughout the United States for several decades. In fact, even throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, many plastic surgeons have reported that the demand for treatments to diminish signs of facial aging and enhance the appearance of facial features has soared. Dr. Dana Coberly, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Tampa, says procedures such as facelift, eyelid surgery, and others can help individuals take years off their appearance and feel more refreshed and confident when they look in the mirror (or when they see their image reflected back at them in a teleconferencing tool on a computer screen). Dr. Coberly says some of the most important questions she gets about these kinds of procedures are often the most frequently asked. Today, she offers information about facial enhancement options that are often requested at her practice:
Facelift
Dr. Coberly says, contrary to what many believe, a traditional facelift does not address the entire face. In fact, this treatment is primarily focused on the lower third of the face and often the upper area of the neck. Dr. Coberly says she is frequently asked about how she can make the results look as natural as possible, as well as “how many years can be taken away” from one’s appearance with a facelift procedure. She explains that advanced facelift techniques combined with a genuinely customized treatment plan can minimize the potential of a “windblown” or “stretched” look while smoothing away signs of wrinkles in the lower facial area, as well as tightening lax skin in the area of the lower jaws and upper neck. Dr. Coberly says facelift surgery can be particularly beneficial for diminishing signs of jowls and refining lower facial contours. Additionally, she notes that scars from the procedure are often very small and placed in discreet areas in the hairline and near the ears. She says some patients may look as much as 10 years younger after a facelift. Plus, she explains that, in some ways, a facelift resets the clock since patients should always look younger at their present age than they would had they never undergone the treatment. In terms of recovery, Dr. Coberly reveals that patients should prepare to fully rest at home for at least one week following treatment, and many individuals are able to return to work and other light activities after about two or three weeks.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)
Also referred to as eyelid lift surgery or the surgical term “blepharoplasty,” eyelid surgery focuses on the upper area of the face just above and below the eyes. Dr. Coberly says this treatment can address areas that a facelift cannot, allowing patients to improve signs of bagginess and puffiness, reduce excess upper eyelid skin, and generally give this facial region a more youthful and refreshed look. She notes that patients can have either the upper or lower eyelid areas enhanced, or have both areas addressed in combination. Scarring from this procedure is virtually unnoticeable, Dr Coberly explains, as the incisions are quite small and typically made in natural creases of the skin around the eyes. She says results can last for many years with the proper health and skin care routines, and this treatment can often go well in combination with a facelift for patients who desire more comprehensive facial rejuvenation. Recovery generally takes about 7-10 days before patients are able to resume their typical daily activities.
Facelift vs. Non-Surgical Cosmetic Enhancement Options
For some individuals, a facelift is not necessary to achieve their goals. Others simply may not be candidates for the procedure. Dr. Coberly says alternatives can often be explored for these patients, and today there are more and more non-surgical options for facial rejuvenation than ever. At the medical spa component of Dr. Coberly’s practice, she offers a vast array of procedures that require little to no invasive treatment techniques. Dr. Coberly says some patients may be eligible for treatments such as cosmetic injectables or dermal fillers (BOTOX® Cosmetic, JUVÉDERM®, and others), which can help significantly minimize signs of wrinkles and fine lines or enhance volume to specific facial features). Other less invasive treatments, like laser skin resurfacing, chemical facial peels, or even medical-grade skin care products may be suitable options for the right candidate. With all of this in mind, Dr. Coberly says it is important that patients know that non-surgical treatments won’t typically be able to match the effects or longevity of results that can be achieved with a surgical procedure; however, each person’s needs are unique, and her recommendations for the best treatment options will be solely based on those needs.
Overall, Dr. Coberly says the most important thing for individuals who are thinking about cosmetic enhancement is to research their options and find a highly experienced and qualified plastic surgeon to help explore them. She notes that patients should always feel confident and comfortable in the surgeon’s care and should never be hesitant to ask questions and to ensure that their concerns are addressed from the outset.
